How Common Are Car Accidents in Georgia in 2024?

While 2024 is not over yet, and there are only limited bits of data available about this year, we can take a look at 2023 figures, which the state has released. Data from the US Department of Transportation found that, in 2023, 40,990 people across the country suffered a fatal car accident.

Data from the Georgia Department of Transportation shares that, in 2023:

  • 1,910,055 traffic crashes occurred in the state
  • 7974 of those crashes were fatal
  • 740,159 people suffered injuries from car crashes across the state
  • 8636 people died in car crashes in 2023

Data also shows that, in the first quarter of 2024, 306 people died in car accidents in Georgia alone (that is just three months at the start of the year).

Consider Just One Weekend in Georgia

In May of 2024, the Georgia Department of Public Safety issued a press release after 8 fatal traffic crashes led to 11 deaths across the state in just a 78-hour span over Memorial Day. Throughout that time, over 500 traffic crashes took place across the state, and a total of 250 people suffered injuries.

Even more interesting, officers made 24,000 traffic stops over that weekend, arresting 500 people who were driving under the influence of alcohol or substances, issued 15,000 warnings to individuals, and wrote 14,000 citations.

Pedestrian and Car Accidents in 2022

Data from the US Department of Transportation for 2022 shares that 7522 pedestrians died in traffic crashes that year, which was an increase from the year before. More so, 67,336 people were hurt as pedestrians on the roadway in traffic accidents.

This data is for the entire country, but it provides some very worrisome details:

  • Every 70 minutes in the US, a person walking on the street is killed in a car accident.
  • Every 8 minutes across the country, a person is struck by a car and injured.
  • 48% of all of these pedestrian-related injuries and accidents involved a driver who was under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
  • 1 out of 4 pedestrians that were killed in 2022 by traffic crashes were struck by a hit-and-run driver.
  • Pedestrians account for 18 percent of all fatalities in traffic accidents in the country, and they make up about 3 percent of all injuries (with a much higher rate of death than those hurt in a car crash who are passengers in a vehicle.
